The Latest Pregnancy Fashion Trends

I remember pregnancy fondly. I wore my husband’s clothes, no shoes (because my feet were so swollen), and was having a good day when I actually put on some lipstick. There are a lot of women out there, and I tragically am one of them, that feel pregnancy is a time to let yourself go a little and dress how you feel, which generally isn’t great. Pregnant women of the world show off your belly and take these last few months of financial freedom to spoil yourself with a new wardrobe because after that baby comes, it’s goodbye Gucci and hello Target but there are some pregnancy fashion trends to follow.
Boyfriend Jeans. These are a great look because boyfriend jeans are comfortable and forgiving to your ever expanding waistline, and buttocks. These are a more casual jean and look great with a basic tee and a pair of flats. You’ll look great and feel relaxed all at the same time and let’s face it, that is all you really want when you’re carrying an eight pound bowling ball in your gut.

Leggings. Leggings, whether they be lace, black, brown, or grey are very flattering to a pregnant woman’s body, especially if paired with a longer top or a tunic. You can also transition leggings into your fall wardrobe with a longer cardigan or a leather jacket. Plan on purchasing a your legging a size or two larger now, so you can grow into them as you get bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

The 1980’s. This trend is being splattered all over the pages of fashion magazines from New York, to Paris, to Milan. Don’t feel that you have to miss out if you are pregnant. The 80’s are all about color, print, and accessories. So hit the mall, or a local thrift store, and purchase oversized tees, jeans, and flats in shocking pink, bright blue, or neon yellow. Think Madonna circa 1986, but give it a 2009 twist. Instead of lace gloves and gold bangles, try an oversized pair of hoop earrings or layer some chunky gold necklaces. The key is to incorporate 80’s looks into an updated wardrobe. Do not go all out and recreate Demi Moore’s look in "St. Elmo’s Fire".
Maxi Dresses. Maxi dresses were huge over the summer of 2009 and will look great into this fall, especially on a pregnant woman’s body. These long, flowing dresses flatter ever expanding tummies and help skim over hips that have gained a few extra pounds. Just pair your Maxi dress with a pair of patent leather boots (if your feet will allow you), and an oversized cardigan. Don’t try to cram into a Maxi dress that you wore 3 months, and 30 pounds ago, because this look is meant to be loose and effervescent. Instead head to a store and simply purchase your dress a few sizes bigger.

If you aren’t comfortable with any of these pregnancy fashion trends, stick to fresh new accessories. Gray is the hot color in handbags, along with animal print inspired accents. Jewelry is chunky and heels are unfortunately high, and should be avoided at all costs.
